Vintage Barkcloth Fabric

I found this vintage barkcloth fabric at Scott's last month.  I had never heard of it before, but was really drawn to this sweet ballerina print.

Barkcloth is a type of cotton with a special weave that gives it a nubby texture similar to tree bark.  It is defined by its texture rather than by weight, fiber content or print.  It is typically a medium-to-heavy weight fabric best suited for upholstery, drapes, and other home decor.
The vendor told me this fabric was from the 1950's and she only had two small pieces, but I knew I had to have it to make a few pillows with.

I decided to trim out these pillows with hand-gathered tulle in coordinating colors.

I love these sweet fabrics from the past.  I wonder what their previous use was and where they've been since the 1950's.

Hopefully they'll live another long life as pillows and made a little ballerina somewhere happy.

  2. WELL DONE, Cindy!

Love that fabric - my aunt had some pillows in a bark fabric waaaay back - they were orange, lime green, gold, yellow and brown - looked very 60s and very Asian if I recall.

I remember asking Auntie about what kind of cloth it was.

Anyway, YOUR fabric-come-pillows is to-die-for lovely.

  3. The first thing that comes to my mind is that they were drapes in a young girls bedroom. I love the tulle trim on them!~Hugs, Patti

  4. I love your cushions. Such a nice contrast - dainty trim and subject on nubbly barkcloth. I love barkcloth and it's so hard to find. I made a set of drapes out of it but I've never seen such a lovely, light-coloured pattern on barkcloth before.

  5. Cindy I love barkcloth and have a bit in my collection. I have never seen the pretty ballerina print however. It is quite adorable and you have done a wonderful job on those pillows as usual!

Not much accomplished this weekend on the creative space-:( I did come up with a great idea for an inspiration board and a different wallcovering idea for the wall- I am just loving the process of it all. Have to work at Antique store so am bringing little bottles and things to pretty up while I am there if I have time.

Hope you week is wonderfully sweet!

  10. Will you be selling these any time soon in town? I was introduced to your work about a year ago at a local festival on the green.

  11. I love it. My mother made me curtains from this exact fabric when I was a child. She has just passed away. Is this fabric still available? I'd like to buy some also. Please, please let me know?
